Search Engine Friendly URLS Not Working?

I recently moved to a new host and transferred my website to HostGator. I backed up the MySQL database on the old site and imported into the new MySQL database. So far everything worked out fine, except for the Search Engine Friendly URLs. When I have the option turned on, my links get broken and I get an message that the /files/xxxxx.html doesn't exist. Any idea what went wrong?

make sure you uploaded the .htaccess and I believe the server will have to support mod rewrite

Problem solved. Looks like when I turned on a few options on my new host, it overwrote the .htaccess file. Thank God for Yze! Yze for president!
